Tummy Tuck

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the look of the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin. A tummy tuck can also restore weakened abdominal muscles, resulting in a firmer belly and more contoured abdominal profile.

What types of tummy tucks are available?

There are many types of tummy tucks designed to address specific body contouring goals. These procedures generally fall into one of these categories:

  • Full tummy tuck: removes loose skin, and abdominal muscles are tightened above and below the belly button
  • Mini tummy tuck: tightens skin and muscle below the belly button only, using a very small incision
  • Modified tummy tuck: addresses only extra skin or loose muscles, with less dramatic results than a full tummy tuck
  • Extended tummy tuck: addresses issues in the flanks or love handles in addition to the areas addressed in a full tummy tuck
  • High tension tummy tuck: tightens and cinches the abdomen to increase the appearance of an “hourglass” figure

If Dr. Soto determines that you’re a candidate for a tummy tuck, he recommends a procedure based on your individual needs and goals.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Most adult men and women who are in good health are candidates for a tummy tuck. If you’d like to tighten your belly after pregnancy or significant weight loss, or if you have problem belly fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise, a tummy tuck may be right for you.

It might not be the best time to have a tummy tuck if you’re planning a pregnancy in the future or you would still like to lose a significant amount of weight.

If you’re a mother whose family is complete, you may consider having a “Mommy Makeover,” which addresses both the breasts and the abdomen. Depending on your individual needs, a Mommy Makeover may include:

  • Breast lift
  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast reduction
  • Liposuction
  • Any type of tummy tuck

While being a mother is a joyful experience, navigating the changes that pregnancy and breastfeeding bring to your body can be discouraging. A Mommy Makeover can restore confidence in your appearance following your child-bearing years.
